Arrested under DSA, writer Mushtaq Ahmed dies in custody

Writer Mushtaq Ahmed died tonight at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, Brigadier General Md Mominur Rahman Mamun, inspector general of prisons, told The Daily Star.

Quoting doctors, the inspector general of prisons said Mushtaq was brought dead at the hospital and the details will be confirmed once the autopsy is done.

He was declared dead at 8:20pm.

In May last year, police arrested the writer from his Dhaka residence under the Digital Security Act. He was not released till his death.

PROCESSION PROTESTING THE DEATH

As news of the death spread, leaders and activists of progressive student’s organisations brought out a procession protesting the death at the prison.

The organisations include Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Samajtrantik Chhatra Front, Biplobi Chhatra Moitri and Bangladesh Chhatra Federation.

The procession was started around 12am from Dhaka University’s TSC and went through Shahbag, Bangla Motor and ended at DU’s Raju Memorial Sculpture, followed by a protest rally.

While addressing the rally, Al Kaderi Joy, president of Samajtrantik Chhatra Front, announced a sit-in programme at TSC at 10:30am today demanding justice over the death of Mushtaq Ahmed.
